Start your pilgrimage at Founders' Hall — Canada's Birthplace Pavilion, a new 21,000 square foot heritage attraction and retail boutique located on the Historic Charlottetown Waterfront. The "Time Travel Tunnel" transports visitors back to 1864, leading them through the pages of Canadian history and concludes with a fast paced look at Canadians from coast to coast to coast. Peake's Wharf Historic Waterfront Merchants (Historic Charlottetown Waterfront) Located at the foot of Great George Street, Peake's Wharf is a special collection of merchants and restaurants that present their wares on the finest waterfront setting on Prince Edward Island. Peake's Wharf offers something for everyone including crafts, clothing, fine gifts, souvenirs, home-made Island ice cream and fresh seafood. Designated as a National Historic District in 1993, Great George Street is graced with the visual splendor of Province House National Historic Site of Canada, the seat of Island government and the Birthplace of Confederation. In 1864, the Fathers of Confederation, attending the Charlottetown Conference, landed at the wharf at the bottom of this street (now Confederation Landing Park) and some Fathers were accommodated at the Pavilion Hotel, formally located on this famous street. Once the centre of the city's business district, today Great George Street is architecturally and historically pleasing, with many commercial interests reviving the life of the buildings with the establishment of unique accommodations and boutiques. Standing proudly at the foot of Great George Street is Province House National Historic Site of Canada - the very heart of the 1864 Conference and now a national icon. Its impressive Colonial portico welcomes all, while its stone walls echo of past debates and dances. Shop & Dine at Victoria Row (Old Charlottetown) The market centre of the city still remains vital and is home to a wide variety of shopping & dining. Adjacent to the Confederation Centre is Victoria Row, home of the original market to the city that was twice destroyed by fire. The fires swept through the commercial district in 1866 and 1884 but lead to a wonderful rebuilding in the Victorian style with brownstone structures and cast iron prefabricated storefronts. Today, Victoria Row contains a wonderful array of restaurants with outdoor decks, as well as craft and gift shops. Estimated time required: 3060 minutes. Estimated time required: 1 hour. Beaconsfield Historic House Beaconsfield, near Victoria Park, was built from a W.C. Harris design for a prominent shipbuilder, James Peake Jr. in 1877. The property is open year-round for tours, lectures and special events, and serves as the headquarters for the Prince Edward Island Museum and Heritage Foundation. The 25 room residence boasted nine decorative marble fireplaces, imported chandeliers, central heating and gaslight in every room. Visitors are welcome to tour Beaconsfield's Victorian furnished rooms and enjoy the wonderful view of the Charlottetown Harbour from its verandah and the Geoff Hogan Victorian Garden.
