Charlottetown Tour Highlights
Its an adventure in history, plus so much more... (download pdf)

Charlottetown is the ideal location for your group travellers. The heritage streetscapes, Historic Charlottetown Waterfront, boutique style shopping, live theatre, great seafood and dining make Charlottetown a must for any tour itinerary.

The city offers over 1100 hotel/motel rooms, as well as a vibrant downtown with plenty of shops and restaurants. Charlottetown is very safe and ideal for walking and easily lends itself to self-exploration.

Charlottetown is best known as the "Birthplace of Canada". It was here that the Fathers of Confederation first met in 1864 to discuss the possible union of all British North America into one country that eventually became Canada. Charlottetown is also home to Anne of Green Gables – The Musical™.

Anne of Green Gables — The Musical™, Canada's favourite musical, will run from June 20 to October 1, 2005—the show's longest run since it began playing in the Confederation Centre of the Arts' Charlottetown Festival in 1965. Based on the novel Anne of Green Gables by Island author L.M. Montgomery, this wonderful family musical tells the poignant and funny story of a redheaded young orphan who turns the staid community of Avonlea on its ear when she comes to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert.

For more information about this and other Festival programming, visit www.confederationcentre.com or contact the Confederation Centre Box Office at 1-800-565-0278.

Start your pilgrimage at Founders' Hall — Canada's Birthplace Pavilion, a new 21,000 square foot heritage attraction and retail boutique located on the Historic Charlottetown Waterfront. The "Time Travel Tunnel" transports visitors back to 1864, leading them through the pages of Canadian history and concludes with a fast paced look at Canadians from coast to coast to coast. Founders' Hall is open mid-May through mid-October and by appointment for groups in the off-season. For reservations, call 1-800-955-1864. Estimated time required: 1 hour. The restaurants and bars offer casual dining and live entertainment. Estimated time required: 45 minutes to 1 1/2 hours.

Designated as a National Historic District in 1993, Great George Street is graced with the visual splendor of Province House National Historic Site of Canada, the seat of Island government and the Birthplace of Confederation. In 1864, the Fathers of Confederation, attending the Charlottetown Conference, landed at the wharf at the bottom of this street (now Confederation Landing Park) and some Fathers were accommodated at the Pavilion Hotel, formally located on this famous street. Once the centre of the city's business district, today Great George Street is architecturally and historically pleasing, with many commercial interests reviving the life of the buildings with the establishment of unique accommodations and boutiques.

Standing proudly at the foot of Great George Street is Province House National Historic Site of Canada - the very heart of the 1864 Conference and now a national icon. Its impressive Colonial portico welcomes all, while its stone walls echo of past debates and dances. The award-winning bilingual video, The Great Dream, begins in a modern theatre, followed by a guided tour of this elegant seat of politics, past and present – The true Birthplace of Canada as a nation! Open year-round. Guided tours for groups can be arranged by calling (902) 566-8287. Estimated time required: 45 minutes.

Shop & Dine at Victoria Row (Old Charlottetown) – The market centre of the city still remains vital and is home to a wide variety of shopping & dining. Adjacent to the Confederation Centre is Victoria Row, home of the original market to the city that was twice destroyed by fire. The fires swept through the commercial district in 1866 and 1884 but lead to a wonderful rebuilding in the Victorian style with brownstone structures and cast iron prefabricated storefronts. Today, Victoria Row contains a wonderful array of restaurants with outdoor decks, as well as craft and gift shops. Estimated time required: 30–60 minutes.

Take a guided tour of PEI's only brewery, Gahan House, Brewers of Handcrafted Ales. Located In Olde Charlottetown, offering a Historic Taste and a Historic Place. Call (902) 626-BEER (2337). Estimated time required: 1 hour.
