The City of Charlottetown is extremely proud of its very special place
in history as the "Birthplace of Confederation". Charlottetown
is where the first meeting of the "Fathers of Confederation"
was held. The City of Charlottetown, named in honour of Queen Charlotte
of England, is 149 years old; it was incorporated as a city in 1855.
The four large squares included in Samuel Holland’s original
layout of Charlottetown still exist to this day. Our population is
approx. 32,000.
Charlottetown has a rich heritage visible through the magnificent
architecture throughout our downtown. The City overlooks an excellent
natural harbour formed by the junction of three major rivers. Charlottetown
has developed into a bustling commercial, government, university,
and cultural centre.
Charlottetown is firmly established as a popular tourist destination
and is also home to the world renowned musical "Anne of Green
Gables". Charlottetown is the entertainment capital of Prince
Edward Island with threatres, festivals, art galleries, tours, concerts
and historical activities.
